Learn More About Confined Space

Health and Safety Awareness Training for Contractors

Workers are often required to complete tasks in what are categorized by OSHA as “confined spaces.” Confined spaces are identified as such because even though they are not designed for continuous occupancy by people, they are large enough for workers to enter in order to perform certain job tasks. Confined spaces have a limited means of entry and exit and are described as having one or more of the following characteristics: contain or have the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere; contain a material that has the potential to engulf an entrant; have walls that converge inward or floors that slope downward and taper into a smaller area which could trap or asphyxiate an entrant; or contain any other recognized safety or health hazard that can be immediately dangerous to life or health. This course, developed by the OPCMIA, is designed to help contractors identify if a work environment qualifies as a confined space according to the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 confined space standard and to introduce them to the types of hazards that can be encountered when working in a confined space. It will also explain safety regulations that are required by OSHA when working in or around confined spaces and best work practices that will help prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Key topics include:

  • Introduction to confined spaces
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146
  • Written Permit-required Confined Space Programs
  • Entry permits and training
  • Permit-required confined space (PRCS) personnel
  • Confined space hazards
  • Confined space rescues
